There have been many historical references to Bangalore but it is only since 1537 that we have a chronological record of its development. This was the time when Kempe Gowda who is supposed to be the precursor of modern Bangalore built a fort made of mud and brick.

He made it a province of the Vijayanagar kingdom. It came into prominence under the British as a crucial centre of the colonial rule in south India.

It is still known for its beautiful cantonment, which attracted many migrants from other parts of the country even then.
